UNIVERSAL CREDIT
Universal credit is a benefit for working-age people, replacing six benefits and merging them into one payment: income support, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, income-related employment and support allowance.
Who qualifies for universal credit?
If you live with your partner and they’re eligible for Universal Credit. you’re responsible for a child, either as a single person or as a couple. you’re disabled and entitled to Disability Living Allowance ( DLA ) or Personal Independence Payment ( PIP ) and have limited capability for work.
How much do you get for universal credit?
There is one basic allowance for your household: Single claimant aged under 25:£251.77 per month. Single claimant aged 25 or over: £317.82 per month. Joint claimants both aged under 25: £395.20 per month.
Can anyone get universal credit?
You will usually only be able to claim Universal Credit if you are aged 18 or over, but some people aged 16 or 17 can get it, depending on their circumstances. And you usually won’t be able to claim Universal Credit if you’re in full-time education or training, but people with certain circumstances can still apply.
As with the other elements that make up a Universal Credit payment, housing costs are normally paid direct to the Claimant/Tenant; not direct to the landlord.
There are protections available for the landlord, e.g. where there are rent arrears.
assist landlords secure payment of the housing element, rather than it being paid to their tenant. … You can still apply for both a Landlords’ Managed Payment and/or Third-Party Deduction to recover rent arrears.
Some landlords will rent to tenants claiming benefits if they are paid directly to them. If you claim housing benefit you can ask the council to pay your housing benefit directly to your landlord. If you claim housing costs under universal credit, you can ask for this to be paid to your landlord in some circumstances.
